Woman assaults UAV cinematographer on the beach and gets charged with 3rd Degree Assault and Breach of Peace. The assault took place at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, CT.
I went to a nearby beach that is a whopping 2 miles long, setup, talked to some people that were curious what my “thing” was, demonstrated the loiter feature (pulling the quad to one direction or another), demonstrated rtl (flying it away then having it return), and make a lot of people think the quad was just awesome. I never went below 50 feet save for take off/landing, then after the end of my last flight, some crazy lady came over and started taking pictures of me…and dialed 911 for the 3rd time in 15 minutes…she said something to the effect of, “There’s a guy here taking pictures at the beach with a helicopter plane.” (I distinctly remember her saying, “with a helicopter plane,” because that just sounds hilarious.) They basically said that they’d send someone when one gets free during each of the 3 calls she made, she decided they didn’t care enough about someone obeying the law so when no one was around she assaulted me and she decided to stop when she got a phone call. I called the police to report the assault, and boy was the response big…10 or more vehicles arrived (cops, DEEP, and an ambulance)…They first listened to her story of lies (she claimed I was taking close ups of people in bikinis, and that she had asked me to stop flying before calling the police, and that I was the one that assaulted her, and and and). The police approached me very aggressively, believing her full story, and before anything else was said I brought up something that she missed… The fact that the cell phone in my hand has a camera…that was recording. I had video evidence that she went nuts completely unprovoked, and was the one that assaulted me. She was then charged with assault, and breach of peace and I gave the cops a copy of the video for their prosecution. I then also showed them my last flight where you can make out her colorful shirt getting up from the beach then following it until it lands which proved that she lied when claiming that she asked me to stop flying before calling the police. At the end of it all, one of the officers said to me basically, “Flying that thing the way you were is fine, you’re not in any trouble. You can come back and fly, but just be aware that some people can be alarmed.”
Just a funny thing to add, last time I was there, a British guy had come up to me and said he thought it was a giant mosquito near him. He said that he first saw snake on a hike here in the States as they don’t have them in the UK, and thought giant mosquitoes were another animal they didn’t have.
On Monday, 05/12/2014 at approximately 1605 hours I was advised that a female had called DEEP Emergency Dispatch Center (EDC) and wanted to talk to a police officer. She was at Hammonasset State Park in MAdison, CT, and had complained that a remote controlled aircraft was being flown over the beach with a camera on it. I immediately called the female (later identified as [REDACTED]) on the phone number given to me. She did not answer and I left a message for her to call me back.
I was then contacted a short time later by my EDC. They advised me that the male party that had been flying the remote controlled aircraft had just called and reported he had been assaulted by a female (later identified as [REDACTED]).
At about the same time I received a phone call back from [REDACTED]. She appeared upset. I explained that a male who was the operator of a remote aircraft had called to report he had been assaulted at the park. I advised her that I and other Police Officers were on the way to the park.
She then said she had been assaulted too. That she was assaulted by the male who was flying the remote aircraft.
[REDACTED] was dispatched and arrived just after Madison Police Officers and a Madison Ambulance.
I arrived a short time later and began gathering information from the listed responding officers.
At approximately 1715 on this date I completed a JD-CD--5 Notice of Rights - Bail form which she read and signed. She was given a copy.
I had my EDC check for prior arrests or failure to appear records. With no record found, Sgt. [REDACTED] approved releasing her on a summons.
[REDACTED] was charged with listed charges and released on summons #[REDACTED] promising to appear in Ga. #23 New Haven Court on [REDACTED].
On this date at approximately 2336 hrs. I contacted and reported the incident to DCF on the hotline by phone. I spoke to [REDACTED] and relayed the pertinent info as required by law for juveniles under 18 years old who are assaulted.
On 05/14/2014 at approximately 1155 hrs. I faxed the completed required DCF-136 form to the New Haven DCF office at fax # [REDACTED]. Copy attached.
Evidence secured at Old Lyme HQ. JD-CR-18 completed by [REDACTED].
Based on the information and evidence developed on scene [REDACTED] was charged with Assault 3rd and Breach of PEace. And though [REDACTED] may have hit [REDACTED] at some point in the incident, it appeared to be while he was defending himself and attempting to get away from her attack.
