On Monday Panera Bread issued a statement to customers asking them not to bring firearms into their restaurants. Panera joins a growing lists of American fast food and retail chains that have become "gun-free zones".
"Within our company, we strive to create Panera Warmth. This warmth means bakery-cafes where customers and associates feel comfortable and welcome. To this end, we ask that guns not be brought into this environment unless carried by an authorized law enforcement officer. Panera respects the rights of gun owners, but asks our customers to help preserve the environment we are working to create for our guests and associates."
Target, Chipotle and Starbucks have adopted similar restrictions on guns following pressure from gun control advocates such as Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Reports state that Panera's new policy was a result of talks with Moms Demand Action, funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
