Ted Cruz's campaign encouraged supporters to spread false rumor about Ben Carson in Iowa

IOWA - Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson's campaign has released official voicemails from the Ted Cruz campaign telling Iowa precinct captains that Carson was "suspending campaigning" after the Iowa caucuses. 

Both phone messages instructed precinct captains to tell Ben Carson supporters to caucus for Cruz since Cason is dropping out of the race. Was this was ethical or just another political trick?
