NASHVILLE - Country music legend Merle Haggard has died on his birthday at the age of 79. According to Haggard's manager, the famous singer died of double pneumonia.
Merle Haggard recorded 38 No. 1 country singles and was responsible for architecting the "Bakersfield Sound".
WSMV-TV reports Haggard died at 9:20 a.m. in California. Merle Haggard is survived by wife, Theresa Ann Lane and his six children. The Tennessean reported Haggard had been dealing with health issues for the past several months causing him to cancel several shows this year.
